The JumpDrive Triton ships in a plastic carton, our test unit looked like it had been through a war zone but the drive was unharmed inside. Inside the box there is a registration slip and a small key chain attachment which looks pretty flimsy so I doubt anybody would actually attach it to the relatively expensive JumpDrive.

Dimensions & Weight

The JumpDrive measures 6.4cm long, 2.2cm wide and 1.0cm high which is below average in terms of total size and bulkiness for a flash drive. Although the JumpDrive has a very solid feel to it thanks to its fully metal backplate it is also one of the heaviest flash drives we have seen weighing 27 grams.

Build Quality

The back half of the JumpDrive is constructed of brushed metal which gives it a brilliant feel, it has machine rounded edges and feels extremely solid and secure. The front face of the drive is made of shiny plastic which is a shame as it detracts slightly from the otherwise excellent build quality. With a retractable design and a strong and secure place to attach a keychain, this drive is perfect to carry around on a building site attached to a keychain. Some people might be weary of the cap less design but in our experience they are not an issue, even if a little dust / grime can get into the connection area it wont impact the drives operation. There is also a small LED indicator on the front of the drive to show when the drive is active.

Test System

The test rig was a high end Core-i7 workstation kitted out with a 256GB Solid State drive and 16GB of RAM. The system was designed to be overclocked to 5GHZ but for the benchmarks, only the stock frequencies of 1.6GHz idle, 3.4GHz active and 3.8GHz turbo boost were used.

CrystalDiskMark Speed Test[FAQ]

CrystalDiskMark is a free disk benchmarking utility that is very simple to use. It takes eight measurements: the read and write speeds in megabytes per second (MBps) for sequential, 512KB, random 4KB and 4KB parallel disk operations. There are more screenshots from this benchmark posted on the web than any other, probably due to its clean and simple display. CrystalDiskMark Score

The Jumpdrive is capable of sustained reads at 170 MB/s which is an outstanding benchmark score for a flash drive and about twice the speed of a regular hard drive. As with many flash drives the only area where the JumpDrive struggled is in the random write tests where it scored just 0.3 MB/s which is in line with several of the other flash drives we have looked at. Where the JumpDrive really stands out is in the area of write speeds where it managed a sustained write of 105 MB/s, this is the highest write score on a 16 GB flash drive we have ever seen.

ATTO Disk Benchmark[FAQ]

The Atto Disk Benchmark has probably been around for longer than any other disk benchmarking software, and you can tell from its dated interface! The utility was designed to measure regular disk drive performance but it's more than up to the task of measuring both USB flash drive and SSD speeds as well. The utility measures disk performance rates for various sizes of file and displays the results in a bar chart showing read and write speeds at each file size. The results are displayed in megabytes per second (MBps). There is further information, including instructions on how to benchmark your own drive, on the Atto wiki page.

The ATTO results for the JumpDrive Triton are broadly in line with the CrystalDiskMark scores and at 170/120 MB/s come in just over the manufacturers claimed speeds of 150/110 MB/s.

AS SSD Real World Copy Speed[FAQ]

The AS SSD benchmarking program was recently developed specifically for benchmarking SSD's. The utility is able to take several measurements that are well suited to solid state drives. One of the tests, ISO copy, is also relevant to slower storage devices including flash drives. The ISO copy test places two large 500MB files in a folder on the drive and then times how long it takes to copy the folder to another location on the same drive. The result is reported in both MBps and time taken. It's a real-world test that gauges a drives ability to read and write at the same time. Drives that have a good balance between their read and write speed fare relatively well on this test. Real World Copy Speed Score

This test shows that the JumpDrive Triton would take 19.78 seconds to create a copy of a large 1GB video file. This score is in line with expectations for the Triton. Generally flash drives complete this test at roughly half their sequential write rates, and that’s almost exactly what the JumpDrive did with its score of 54.29 MB/s.

Conclusion

The JumpDrive Triton has superb benchmark scores, it pretty much topped out in every single category. This kind of across the board performance is so rare that there is no doubt that as of today this is the fastest all round consumer grade flash drive your hard earned money can buy. As well as being the fastest memory stick the Triton is also one of the most durable, with solid metal encasing the majority of the drive and a secure retractable design we were very impressed with the build quality and would expect it to work without issue for several years. The only sticking point with this drive could be its price which makes it one of the more expensive memory sticks we have seen, we think it's worth it.

I bought mine for 20€, which I guess puts it on par with the Sandisk Extreme in your hierarchy or even higher if you add to the mix the Lexar lifetime warranty. Highly recommended.

This drive is different from the rest, they use a different technology which seems to give it orders of magnitude better write performance than most the other USB 3.0 drives. Pros: Unbeatable sequential write speed. Cons: Relatively expensive.

The Lexar Triton is part constructed of brushed metal giving it a very solid feel. It is also very fast, particularly at reading and writing large files. The only problem I have with the Triton is its 4K write speed which is only slightly above average. So despite the Triton's record breaking sequential write speed, for day to day use, the Sandisk Extreme is far quicker thanks to its record breaking 4K write speed. Additionally because the Extreme costs around half as much as the Triton, the Extreme is a no-brainer.

I ordered the 32 gig version. Should be here shortly. I will post benchmarks after testing the one I receive. Some have made negative comments about the Lexar Triton and lauded the SanDisk Extreme because of its 4K random write speed. But the jury appears still out on that one. It seems not everyone is attaining the 4K speeds of the sample reviewed here. Additionally, Amazon.com and newegg.com customer comment sections are indicating a high rate of failure on the SanDisk Extreme. Finally, the Lexar Triton significantly outperforms the SanDisk Extreme in several areas: it nearly doubles the SanDisk's sequential write speed, triples its copy speed, and the Lexar has a 40% longer useful life expectancy. Surely it does not deserve a rating of "poor" as some have posted. That being said, I will probably (also) purchase a SanDisk Extreme in several months when they get these issues resolved. I will modify my rating on the Lexar after I do benchmarks.
